The Project

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (BCBSNJ) is a not-for-profit health care company that provides high-quality and cost-effective healthcare delivery systems, insurance, and related products/services to public and private markets.

There are no shareholders. It is New Jersey’s largest and oldest health insurance company. They offer managed care and traditional indemnity plans for individuals and employers, plus a variety of medical, dental, vision, and prescription insurance products and services.

The User Experience

The Horizon BCBSNJ Member Services Portal is a secure online website that enables Horizon plan members to track their health care. This robust online tool helps policyholders keep track of their healthcare provider visits, test results, billing, prescriptions, and so on. They can also message their provider questions through the portal.

The main goal of this user experience is to provide Horizon plan members with an easy-to-use interface to obtain a complete picture of their medical history – including recent doctor visits, discharge summaries, allergies, medications, immunizations, and lab results and the ability to:

  • Pay bills online
  • Find Doctors, Pharmacies & Specialists
  • Communicate with healthcare providers
  • Schedule appointments
  • Receive test results
  • Request prescription refills
  • Check benefits and coverage
  • Fill out forms
  • Receive billing statements

The user experience provides patients with convenient, 24-hour access to their personal health information from anywhere with an Internet connection. Ultimately, this portal empowers plan members with more control of their health information and care, while providing additional healthcare support between doctor visits.

Manage Your Account

Track your out-of-pocket costs for health care services. Out-of-pocket costs include deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments for covered services plus all costs for services that aren’t covered.

Pay Your Premiums

To check on the status of an invoice or make a payment online, visit the “Payment Center” section of your Member Portal. For any remaining questions about the status of your invoice, use our “Email Us” or “Chat” tools and select Premium Billing.

(EOB) Explanation of Benefits

An EOB, or Explanation of Benefits, gives you an overview of what was billed, how much your insurance covered, and how much you may owe. Whenever you visit a doctor, other health care professional, laboratory or hospital, an EOB is generated.

If your healthcare provider belongs to Horizon’s network, Horizon will submit the claim for you. However, if you visit an out-of-network provider, you may need to submit a claim yourself. 

An EOB is not a bill – it explains which medical care and services are covered by your insurance.

ID Cards

View, print and request additional member ID cards online. You can even text or email your digital ID card right to your doctors and hospitals.
